October 2009 News LETCHWORTH ROUND TABLE CELEBRATES 75 YEARS

Letchworth Round Table celebrates 75 years as a charitable organisation in the local community.

The Table held two events in October to mark this occasion.

Fundraising Cycle Event

fUNDRAISING cYCLE eVENT

On the first Saturday of October several intrepid members of Letchworth Round Table set off from Norwich back towards Letchworth using pedal power with the aim of completing the journey in the one day.  As well as a celebration of Letchworth Round Table’s 75 Years, the event was organised to raise funds to support future fundraising events.

Why Norwich? This is where the very first Round Table was established in 1927 and is approximately 75 miles from Letchworth – it’s as simple as that!

If you would like to make a donation to this fundraising event please contact any of the Tablers in the Contact Us section.

75 Year Charter Evening

Letchworth Round Table followed Table tradition and held a Charter Evening celebration to mark its 75 Years. This was attended by many former Letchworth Tablers as well as from Hitchin, Royston, Bedford, Norwich and further afield from our equivalent 81 clubs in Germany and Finland.

A great night was had by all to celebrate the fellowship and camaraderie of Round Table.

ROUND TABLE SETS THE WHEELS IN MOTION FOR THE CHILDREN OF WOOLGROVE SCHOOL

In 2008 the Woolgrove School PTA began raising funds to buy a new play-on train for pupils to feature in the school play area (see also November 2008 News). Letchworth Round Table were tipped off about their fundraising and pledged the remaining funds needed to help the train pull into town much sooner than anticipated.

Oliver Heald MP visited Woolgrove School on Friday 3rd April to officially unveil the train. The train now takes pride of place at the school and is a big hit with all the children.

This is one of many projects that Letchworth Round Table, now in its 75th year as a Club, has helped the Community through its own charitable fundraising activities. Chairman David Rodway declared: ‘We are delighted to be able to help Woolgrove School in this way and have seen the joy the train has brought to all the pupils’.

January to March 2009 News

After a hectic time raising funds and then delivering more than 260 food parcels for the needy in Letchworth over the Christmas period, the first few months of the New Year were spent planning the next twelve months of events. However that did not stop Letchworth Round Table members from enjoying themselves. Here is a flavour of some of the events organised for the first quarter of 2009;

Burns Night – the 41 Club of Letchworth, which is the older brother of Round Table, invited Tablers to celebrate the Scottish Bard’s birth date in style with traditional Scottish food and drink and trying to recite some of his poems. A good time was had by all!

Ten Pin Bowling – Several other Round Table clubs in the area attended a bowling competition in Stevenage. A great way to meet fellow Round Tablers and share stories. Let’s just say that Letchworth did not win.

Ghost Walk – Hitchin has plenty of history and Tablers were entertained by an organised walk through the town visiting several haunted locations. No ghostly apparitions were spotted, but several members were suitably wary of what was lurking in the shadows.

Snooker – Congratulations to the team from Letchworth which fought gallantly against other Round Table clubs in the region to get through to the semi-finals.

Tablers go to the Dogs – Another gathering of several Round Tables in the Herts/Beds/Bucks area, where good and not-so-good tips were shared amongst members for betting on the dogs at Henlow Greyhound Stadium.

November 2008 News - Donations

Letchworth Round Table made two donations to local organisations this month.

One of our considerations for charitable funding is to make a contribution that has a lasting benefit within the local community. The Governors of Woolgrove School in Letchworth, a primary special school for children with moderate learning difficulties, approached LRT to help fund a static play train. The train is specially designed to help the children enjoy the outdoors and play in a safe, yet exciting environment. LRT was able to fully finance the purchase of the train and we had great pleasure in handing it over to the school’s head teacher, Mrs Bridget Walton. A more formal presentation is planned in the New Year – details to follow.

LRT has often helped more than one organisation at the same time. Once again in recent years LRT purchased several tickets from St Paul 's Amateur Dramatic Society (SPADS) in Letchworth to help fund their Christmas pantomime production, Aladdin. In turn the tickets were donated to the Noel Family Centre (NFC) in Letchworth to hand to families who may not otherwise be able to enjoy the show.

On occasion LRT is able to help the community through action as an alternative to cash donations.  The North Herts Sanctuary in Hitchin provides night shelter for the homeless, and relies on volunteer help to offer this invaluable service.  Along with some other charitable organisations LRT was invited to help tidy up the accommodation which included yard clearance as well as decorating interior walls.  The work was completed over five weekends in October and November with gangs of up to five LRT members at a time.
